I watched Colossal for the first time a couple of days ago and I liked it, the story is nothing like I have ever seen before.
The movie starts with Gloria, a Character played by Anne Hathaway, being kicked out of the apartment by her boyfriend, Tim, in a heartless manner. (spoilers warning)
She had to move back to her hometown, since she's jobless and has nowhere else to go, she meets her old classmate Oscar, played by Jason Sudeikis.
Oscar has a crush on Gloria, but something seems off about him, he introduces her to his friends Garth and Joel.
Gloria goes through a kids' playground while the world gets breaking news of a giant monster attacking South Korea.
Meanwhile, Oscar starts manipulating Gloria, exploiting that she's jobless and broke, he gives her a TV, offers her a job at his bar then gives her a couch. Trying too hard to act like a good guy and Gloria falls into this trap.
Gloria and the rest of the group were terrified by the events happening in Seoul, while Oscar seemed not bothered by the people losing their lives.
She starts realizing that she's connected to this giant creature and while she's drunk she makes the mistake of telling the group that the monster mirrors her moves.
But things get more shocking, Oscar seems to be connected to a giant robot that appears at the same place with the monster when he stands at the playground, just like Gloria.
Being overwhelmed with regrets, Gloria makes her monster appear and sends an apology for the people of South Korea.
When she sleeps with Joel, that made Oscar furious, and now his dark and psychopathic side is clearly shown to everyone. His true nature is now confirmed.
She remembers how this phenomenon started when they were kids, while Oscar is threatening her that he will kill people using his roboot alter ego, if she returns to the city with Tim.
Being a horrible person, Oscar beats up Gloria and kills a lot of people in the process, making his threats seem more believable and scary.
Gloria takes charge of the situation, she goes to Seoul, which makes the monster appear in the playground face to face with Oscar. She's really smart. I didn't expect this step.
She magnificently stops Oscar who was getting ready to massacre tons of innocent people. She and the entire world are finally free from his evil.
Anne Hathaway was fantastic in this movie, she is a wonderful actress and managed to deliver the different emotions of the character perfectly.
The character development was interesting, she went from being drunk and begging her boyfriend to forgive her, to this strong woman who stands against pure evil (yes Oscar is pure evil).
Jason Sudeikis played the character phenomenally, the only thing that was missing from this movie is that I wanted more explaining about the giant creatures, who was behind their making? Aliens? Ancient forces? What? If you know please comment.
