How To Start Exercising: A Beginner's Guide

The benefits of exercising are well-documented and have been proven with multiple research over the years. Regular exercise has been shown to improve mental health, decrease stress levels, and boost energy levels. It can also help you sleep better, lower your risk for chronic diseases, and improve your overall fitness.

I have been inactive while growing up and it impacted my health negatively, that's why I'm passionate about motivating people to stay active.

Staying active doesn't necessarily mean hours of intense workout sessions at the gym, if you can do that then good for you. You can remain active by going for a walk or doing a simple light cardio or gentle stretching routine. Many people relate staying active with the need to do intense workouts, which is false. This wrong idea about staying active could lead to stepping away from working out, which isn't good for us.

A little goes a long way when it comes to exercises, you don't need complicated routines and expensive classes to start your fitness journey. Staying consistent and listening to your body are the keys in your wellness journey. Start slowly to reduce the risk of hurting yourself and skip or adjust any movements that could be too much for you. Doing low-impact and gentle on the knees exercises works great and will help you reach your goals.

Working out at home has a bad reputation but the fact is that many online fitness instructors offer free workout videos that do work. My favorite fitness instructor is definitely: Mizi and you can find her YouTube channel on this link.

You can start with a 10 minute of light cardio or relaxing stretches. As long as you keep your body moving, you're doing great.

In this beginner’s guide, I will show you how to start exercising, even if you’re starting from scratch.

The Benefits of Exercise:

Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on your mental and physical health.

It can help reduce stress levels, improve sleep quality, boost energy levels, strengthen your heart and lungs, and improve your overall fitness.

Reducing the risk for several chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke are also part of the benefits of exercising.

Exercise can also help boost your mood and self-esteem, as it can help you look and feel better about yourself.

Beyond the physical benefits, regular exercise can improve your mental wellbeing as well.

Exercising releases endorphins, which can help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and lift your mood.

It can also help improve your concentration and focus, as well as increasing productivity and creativity.

Making Time for Exercise:

One of the most common obstacles to exercising is finding the time.

It can be challenging to find time to exercise while still meeting all of your responsibilities.

One way to make time for exercise is to schedule it into your day (during breaks for example).

This doesn’t have to be a lengthy block of time; even just 10-20 minutes a day can have a significant impact on your overall health.

You can also break your exercise into smaller chunks throughout the day, such as taking a few minutes to walk during your lunch break or doing a gentle stretch in the morning before work.

You can combine exercise with your daily activities, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking to run errands instead of driving.

Finding an Exercise Routine that Works for You:

It’s important to find an exercise routine that works for you, as this can make it much easier to make exercise a regular part of your life.

Personally, I love Yoga and light cardio workouts at home, I also like standing Pilates.

There are a variety of different types of exercise, and which one you choose will depend on your lifestyle and what you enjoy.

Cardio activities like walking, running, cycling, swimming, or even dancing in your living room can be a great way to get moving and get your heart rate up.

Strength training with weights or resistance bands can also be a great way to add some muscle tone and improve your overall fitness.

You can also try activities like yoga or Pilates for a more relaxed approach to exercise.

Motivating Yourself to Keep Exercising:

Exercise is a long-term commitment and it can be difficult to stay motivated in the short term.

One way to stay motivated is to set small, achievable goals for yourself.

These goals should be realistic and attainable, as well as rewarding.

Don't compare your process with others, it's unhealthy and you might get discouraged.

Our fitness levels vary, some people can lift weights but can't touch their toes and vice versa.

Also, our energy levels go up and down, so adjust your routine to suit your energy.

Exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on your mental and physical health, but it can be difficult to start exercising if you haven’t been active in the past.  This beginner’s guide has shown you how to start exercising and make it a regular part of your life.

In this post, we discussed the benefits of exercise, how to make time for it in your busy schedule, how to find an exercise routine that works for you, and how to motivate yourself to keep exercising.
