Initially, I thought Stromboli was a film about broken marriages. While that is certainly a big part of the film, there's so much more to it than that.
Elise Schaap, who plays Sara, begins the film as a character struggling with her relationship with her daughter and her failed marriage.
Later in the film, more of her past gets revealed and nothing could have prepared me for this shocking scene, it's very heartbreaking.
Stromboli also briefly follows the lives of people who are with Sara in a healing retreat called "from fear to love", they are all struggling in different ways.
Each character in this group went through a traumatic experience, and you can't help but feel for them as they navigate their challenges.
Stromboli is an emotional rollercoaster, the flashbacks that Sara has, are devastating. The performances by the cast are outstanding, and the movie is definitely worth watching. However, be warned that it is definitely not a happy movie.
