Easy ways to self soothe

We had the most intense thunderstorm that I have ever witnessed in my life and it lasted for hours until almost 4 am. The thunder was really loud and that made me feel a bit anxious. Also my cats were terrified but my dog pretended to be brave.

So now I need self-soothing techniques to regulate my emotions and I'm going to post about them here and choose what will work for me and do it or maybe do them all.

Ways to help self-soothe:

-Breathing deeply: there are many breathing techniques to help you calm down but my favorite is so simple, which is mindful breathing for few minutes. It's very easy to do and has amazing effects.

-Moving your body: Any type of movement can be helpful in self-soothing. I love yoga and my favorite move to self-soothe is "knocking on heaven's door".

-Self-massage: This technique will help you get your focus back to yourself and give you a feeling of safety. It doesn't have to be complicated. Massaging my neck and shoulders always helps in soothing my anxiety.

-Scented candles: I don't know why it works but lighting a vanilla scented candle next to me makes me feel less stressed.

-Give yourself a hug: wrap your arms around you and hug yourself as long as you need. This technique is also used in yoga classes. Or if you have someone to hug you then ask them to do that.

-Shower: It's as simple as that. Visualize shower water washing away your anxiety.

-Rest: Don't overwhelm yourself with activities. Give your nervous system a chance to regulate itself.

-Spend time with your loved ones and yes they can be pets.

-Visualize your happy place and being there with your favorite person.

Deep breathing, visualization, or physical touch are the most common ways to self-soothe. Choose what works for you.
