Invading your privacy and safety in public spaces is something that women face daily all over the world and it can lead to feeling unsafe.
This could be anything from a stranger staring at you for too long, following you, or trying to get a hold of your personal info.
A stranger tried to invade my privacy and that terrified me to the point my hands were shaking and I messed up an important document.
Regardless of the situation that you might be facing, it's important to know how to handle it in order to protect yourself.
Here are some tips on how to deal with a stranger invading your privacy:
Trust Your Gut
Don't ignore your feelings or assume that you're overreacting. Sometimes we gaslight ourselves and that's not the best thing to do at this moment.
Be aware of your surroundings
If you're in a public place, do your best not to notice what's going on around you and stay alert.
Use Your Voice
Use a firm, clear voice to tell them to stop. It's important to be assertive and not to apologize or make excuses for your boundaries.
Get Away
This could mean leaving a restaurant or crossing the street. Creating distance sends a clear message that you're not interested in interacting with the person and you want to be left alone.
Seek Help
If you feel like you're being harassed, then seek help immediately. This could mean calling the police or asking for help from someone nearby.
Sadly, women need to know these tips to be safe, but women need to know how to handle this type of situation. Remember that you have the right to be safe and protect yourself.
