Against Normalizing Filming People in Public

It has become increasingly common to see videos of people filmed in public without their consent and posted without even blurring their faces.

Filming others is often driven by the desire to gain attention on social media platforms. In some cases, it can lead to the public shaming of the person being recorded, creating a form of vigilante justice in the online sphere.

Moreover, some people engage in unauthorized filming with the intention of body-shaming the subject. These people seek to ridicule or mock the person in question. This behavior not only violates the privacy of the individual being filmed but also normalizes a culture of online bullying and harassment.

This can have harmful effects on the mental and emotional well-being of the person targeted and other people who encounter these posts.

Such actions not only intrude upon the privacy and dignity of people
but also contribute to a toxic online environment.

Some people may prioritize likes, views, and followers over respecting others' privacy. The pursuit of viral content can lead people to cross boundaries and invade the personal space of unsuspecting people for the sake of online recognition.

Some people may seek to document confrontations, accidents, or unusual events to share online for shock value or to attract a large audience.

The allure of capturing something out of the ordinary may compel people to disregard the privacy and consent of those being filmed.

In some cases, the urge to film others without permission in public may stem from a lack of awareness or consideration for privacy rights.

Some people may not fully understand the impact of their actions or may not prioritize the feelings and boundaries of others. Ignorance, coupled with a sense of entitlement to record anything in a public space, can contribute to the behavior of filming without consent.

Why we shouldn't normalize filming people in public without their consent?

-It's a violation of privacy: Everyone has the right to privacy, even in public spaces.

-It can be used to harass or intimidate people: This is especially true for people who are already marginalized or vulnerable.

-It can create a negative effect on freedom: When people know that they could be filmed and posted online without their consent, they may be less likely to speak out or express their opinions. This can create a chilling effect on free speech.

For example, recently, an influencer posted a video from inside a gender-neutral bathroom. The video was widely criticized for violating the privacy of the people who were using the bathroom.

The influencer's video is a clear example of why we should not normalize filming people in public without their consent.

We must not normalize filming people in public without their consent. It's a violation of privacy, it can be used to harass or intimidate people, and it can negatively impact freedom.
